Mid-February in Southport

Last week James accompanied me for the first time down to Southport NC. He has some time off work right now and so we beat feet down to a (slightly) warmer environment.

Monday we paddled from the marina out to Cape Fear and played in the "popcorn water" of Frying Pan Shoals. James says he might have some video so stay tuned for that posting later. That day we paddled 18.5 miles. The winds were steady at 10 plus knots and were against us on our paddle home. We timed our trip against the tide in both directions, but only because that was when we had day light. As a result we were beat when we got back to the house.

So here are a few photos of the trip, because I know that is what my dear reader wants to see:

Above is a link to video the husband shot of the slightly more exciting parts of the trip.

One last break on a sand bar in the channel between Bald Head and Oak Islands. The bar is only accessible during low tide.

Tuesday it was too rainy and cold for even intrepid paddlers such as myself and Coach, so I went out and looked at some houses that are on the market. We are thinking about relocating at some point.

Wednesday we paddled from Southport's marina north up the Cape Fear River to the Ft Fisher Ferry Depo. We timed that trip perfectly, riding an incoming tide up and turning back down with the outgoing tide. Again we had a steady 10 knot plus wind but this time it was at our backs on the way home. We easily "sailed" along at 5 plus knots on the return.

James borrowed Brian's NDK Explorer HV. We looked like an NDK ad heading out.

After our first break we headed across the river to the Ferry. At this point my right shoulder declared it had had enough. The pain was pretty bad. I got sloppy in desperation to make it to the Ferry Depo. Once we took a break there it was not so bad. Brian suggested in all seriousness that I consider a ride back to Southport on the Ferry. I had cash and then the guys would have driven around to pick me up. But as I said above, the ride home on the tide with the wind at our backs was a piece of cake.
