Shark attacks on Oak Island
My dear reader probably realizes by now that I love animals, this includes sharks. We are in their environment when we paddle and play in the surf. Two attacks, hours from each other, were quite close to where I was paddling last week. They followed an attack in the same area a few days earlier, although that victim did not lose a limb, thankfully. Indeed, we were in the same water, just across on Bald Head Island. The photos in my last blog post of the lighthouse are the Oak Island Light.

Last Monday as we were finishing our trip back to Southport I saw a 4 foot shark I tentatively ID'ed as a bull shark resting in the shallows, only steps from the beach. She took off with a great slap of her tail as I realized what I was looking at.

Although I am, for certain, no expert on sharks, I have read enough to make a guess that these were attacks by the same individual shark. I know the authorities will be thinking about a shark hunt. I can only hope dozens of sharks do not fall victim to a witch hunt.
I have great sadness for the two young people injured. I have a hard time imagining life without two arms. Bless their hearts.
