I went off into the "country-side" to meet with friends of old whom I have not seen in several years. Our lives have drifted in different directions. As I have become more and more a sea kayaker, they have become parents of two charming little boys. They live in the rolling hills of the piedmont where as I live right above the Potomac River, just shy of the flood plain. I guess we are both "living the dream," although our dreams differ quite a bit.
The plan was to bike a small segment of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Towpath. If you are a cyclist or even a casual tourist on a bike, the C & O is a thing of beauty. Long and gently inclining to the north and west, it feels fairly flat. It is a some-what maintained double track, meaning bikes and hikers pass in both directions. It is only congested near Great Falls.
Actually, Great Falls is lovely, but all the pedestrians there mean it is NOT a bike friendly scene. I tend to start my rides above Great Falls.
We left from Brunswick MD and rode up to Harpers Ferry and back. It was a lovely ride of about 15 miles. Perfect for the first ride of the season for me. It did not matter that it was misty and rainy the whole time. I had a wonderful day re-connecting with my old friends. Life feels really good when you share it with kind people.
